Skull Base Surgery

Skull base surgery is a specialized neurosurgical procedure performed to treat conditions affecting the base of the skull, where the brain connects with the spinal cord and major nerves and blood vessels pass through. It is commonly recommended for brain tumors, pituitary tumors, acoustic neuromas, meningiomas, skull base cysts, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks, and certain vascular abnormalities. Depending on the condition, the surgery may be performed using minimally invasive endoscopic techniques through the nose (endonasal approach) or traditional open surgery (craniotomy). The primary goal is to remove or treat the abnormal tissue while preserving important brain structures, nerves, and blood vessels.

Your Care Journey

We believe in complete transparency. Here is what you can expect at every step of your procedural journey with our specialized medical team.

Before Surgery

Before surgery, the neurosurgeon performs a comprehensive evaluation to determine the safest surgical approach. The evaluation may include: Neurological examination, MRI or CT scan of the brain, CT angiography or cerebral angiography (if required), Blood tests, ECG and anaesthesia fitness assessment. Patients are generally advised to: Follow fasting instructions before surgery, Inform the doctor about medications and allergies, Stop blood-thinning medicines if advised, Arrange support during recovery.

Day of Surgery

On the day of surgery, the patient receives general anaesthesia. Depending on the condition, the surgeon performs the procedure using an endoscopic endonasal approach through the nasal passages or an open craniotomy to access the skull base. The tumor, cyst, or abnormal tissue is carefully removed or repaired while protecting nearby nerves, blood vessels, and healthy brain tissue. After ensuring complete treatment and adequate bleeding control, the surgical site is closed. The procedure usually takes 3–8 hours, depending on the complexity of the condition.

Post Surgery

After surgery, the patient is monitored in the ICU or neurosurgical ward. Neurological observation, pain management, and rehabilitation are important parts of recovery. Patients are advised to: Take prescribed medications, Keep the surgical wound clean and dry, Avoid strenuous activities, Attend regular follow-up visits and imaging studies, Follow rehabilitation instructions if required. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe headache, fever, wound discharge, persistent nasal fluid leakage, seizures, vision changes, or increasing weakness.
