Laparoscopic gallbladder surgery

Before undergoing laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, patients are evaluated through physical examination and imaging tests such as ultrasound or CT scans to confirm the presence of gallstones or inflammation. Blood tests may also be performed to assess liver function. Doctors review the patient’s medical history, including any existing conditions such as diabetes or hypertension. Patients are advised to fast for several hours before surgery and may need to adjust certain medications under medical guidance. Preoperative counseling helps patients understand the procedure and recovery expectations.

On the day of surgery, the patient is given general anesthesia to ensure a pain-free experience. The surgeon makes small incisions in the abdomen and inserts a laparoscope, a thin tube with a camera, along with specialized surgical instruments. Carbon dioxide gas is used to inflate the abdomen, providing better visibility of the surgical area. The gallbladder is carefully separated from the liver and removed through one of the small incisions. The incisions are then closed with stitches or surgical glue. The procedure typically takes 45 to 90 minutes and is less invasive compared to traditional open surgery.

After the surgery, patients are monitored in the recovery area until the effects of anesthesia wear off. Most patients can go home the same day or within 24 hours. Mild pain or discomfort at the incision sites is common but manageable with medication. Patients are encouraged to start walking soon after surgery to promote healing and prevent complications. A light diet is recommended initially, gradually returning to normal eating habits. Follow-up visits are scheduled to monitor recovery and ensure proper healing.
