Angioplasty (Percutaneous Coronary Intervention – PCI)

Angioplasty, also known as Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI), is a minimally invasive procedure used to open blocked or narrowed arteries, most commonly in the heart. These blockages occur due to plaque buildup, which restricts blood flow and can lead to chest pain, shortness of breath, or heart attacks. Angioplasty restores blood flow by using a small balloon catheter that widens the artery, often followed by the placement of a stent to keep the artery open. This procedure has become a preferred treatment option for many patients due to its effectiveness, shorter recovery time, and lower risk compared to open-heart surgery. It is commonly performed both as a planned treatment and as an emergency intervention during heart attacks.
