Scoliosis Surgery

Scoliosis surgery is performed to correct an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine and prevent it from worsening. It is usually recommended for patients with moderate to severe scoliosis when the spinal curve continues to progress despite bracing or causes significant pain, breathing difficulties, poor posture, or reduced quality of life. The most common procedure is spinal fusion, where the curved vertebrae are realigned and permanently joined using bone grafts, screws, rods, and other implants. The surgery aims to straighten the spine as much as safely possible, improve spinal balance, reduce pain, and protect long-term spinal function.

Your Care Journey

We believe in complete transparency. Here is what you can expect at every step of your procedural journey with our specialized medical team.

Before Surgery

Before surgery, the spine specialist performs a comprehensive evaluation to determine the severity of the spinal curve and plan the procedure. The evaluation may include: Physical and neurological examination, Standing spinal X-rays, MRI or CT scan (if required), Blood tests, ECG and anaesthesia fitness assessment. Patients are generally advised to: Follow fasting instructions before surgery, Inform the doctor about medications and allergies, Stop blood-thinning medicines if advised, Arrange support during recovery.

Day of Surgery

On the day of surgery, the patient receives general anaesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision over the spine, carefully realigns the curved vertebrae, and stabilizes them using metal rods, screws, and bone grafts. These implants hold the spine in the corrected position while the bones gradually fuse together. After confirming proper alignment and stability, the incision is closed with sutures or staples. The procedure usually takes 4–8 hours, depending on the severity of the spinal curvature and the number of vertebrae being treated.

Post Surgery

After surgery, the patient is monitored in the recovery room or ICU before being transferred to the hospital ward. Pain management, early mobilization, and physiotherapy are important parts of recovery. Patients are advised to: Begin walking as recommended, Take prescribed medications, Attend physiotherapy sessions, Avoid bending, twisting, and heavy lifting, Keep the surgical wound clean and dry, Attend regular follow-up visits and imaging studies. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience fever, severe pain, wound discharge, increasing weakness, numbness, or loss of bladder or bowel control.
