Laminectomy

Laminectomy is a surgical procedure performed to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or spinal nerves by removing a portion of the lamina, the bony part at the back of a vertebra. It is commonly recommended for patients with spinal stenosis, herniated discs, bone spurs, spinal tumors, or degenerative spine conditions that cause persistent back pain, leg pain, numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness. The surgery creates more space within the spinal canal, helping reduce nerve compression and improve mobility. In some cases, a laminectomy may be combined with spinal fusion if additional spinal stability is required.

Your Care Journey

We believe in complete transparency. Here is what you can expect at every step of your procedural journey with our specialized medical team.

Before Surgery

Before surgery, the spine specialist evaluates the patient's symptoms and determines whether laminectomy is the appropriate treatment. The evaluation may include: Physical and neurological examination, MRI or CT scan, X-rays, Blood tests, ECG and anaesthesia fitness assessment. Patients are generally advised to: Follow fasting instructions before surgery, Inform the doctor about medications and allergies, Stop blood-thinning medicines if advised, Arrange support during recovery.

Day of Surgery

On the day of surgery, the patient receives general anaesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision over the affected part of the spine and removes a portion of the lamina to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or compressed nerves. If necessary, bone spurs or herniated disc material may also be removed during the procedure. After confirming adequate nerve decompression, the incision is closed with sutures or staples. The surgery usually takes 1–3 hours, depending on the number of spinal levels being treated.

Post Surgery

After surgery, the patient is monitored until the effects of anaesthesia wear off. Most patients begin walking within 24 hours and are discharged once pain is controlled and mobility improves. Patients are advised to: Walk regularly as recommended, Take prescribed medications, Avoid heavy lifting, bending, and twisting, Attend physiotherapy sessions if advised, Keep the incision clean and dry, Attend follow-up appointments. Seek immediate medical attention if you develop fever, severe pain, wound discharge, increasing weakness, numbness, or loss of bladder or bowel control.

Common Questions

A laminectomy is recommended for patients with spinal stenosis, herniated discs, bone spurs, or other conditions that compress the spinal nerves and do not improve with medications, physiotherapy, or other non-surgical treatments.
