Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)
Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is an advanced neurosurgical procedure used to treat certain neurological movement disorders that do not respond adequately to medications. It is most commonly recommended for Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, dystonia, and in selected cases, epilepsy and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). During the procedure, thin electrodes are implanted into specific areas of the brain and connected to a small battery-powered device called a neurostimulator, which is placed under the skin near the chest. The device sends controlled electrical impulses to regulate abnormal brain activity, helping reduce symptoms such as tremors, stiffness, involuntary movements, and muscle spasms. DBS does not cure the underlying neurological disease but can significantly improve symptom control, daily functioning, and quality of life for carefully selected patients.
