Dialysis Treatment (Hemodialysis)
Hemodialysis is a kidney replacement therapy used when the kidneys are no longer able to adequately remove waste products, excess fluid, and certain electrolytes from the blood. During treatment, blood is circulated through a dialysis machine and a special filter called a dialyzer, which removes waste and excess fluid before returning the cleaned blood to the body. Hemodialysis is commonly used for people with advanced chronic kidney disease or kidney failure. It may also be required temporarily in certain cases of severe acute kidney injury. Before regular hemodialysis can begin, the patient usually needs a reliable vascular access, such as an arteriovenous (AV) fistula, AV graft, or dialysis catheter.
