Open Heart Surgery

Before undergoing open heart surgery, patients go through a comprehensive evaluation process to determine their suitability for the procedure. This includes diagnostic tests such as ECG, echocardiography, chest X-rays, blood tests, and coronary angiography if required. These tests help doctors understand the severity of the condition and plan the surgery accordingly. Patients are advised to make certain lifestyle adjustments prior to surgery, including quitting smoking, following a heart-healthy diet, and managing conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. Medications may be adjusted, particularly blood thinners, to reduce the risk of bleeding during surgery. Fasting is required for several hours before the procedure, and detailed counseling is provided to prepare the patient mentally and physically for surgery.

On the day of surgery, the patient is taken to the operating room where general anesthesia is administered, ensuring a pain-free and unconscious state throughout the procedure. A breathing tube is inserted, and the patient is connected to a ventilator to assist with breathing. The surgeon makes an incision in the chest and carefully opens the breastbone to access the heart. In most cases, the heart is temporarily stopped, and a heart-lung machine is used to maintain blood flow and oxygenation. The specific surgical procedure—such as bypass grafting, valve repair, or defect correction—is then performed based on the patient's condition. Once the procedure is completed, the heart is restarted, and the chest is closed using surgical wires and sutures. The patient is then moved to the intensive care unit (ICU) for close monitoring.

After open heart surgery, patients are closely monitored in the ICU for the first 24 to 48 hours. Vital signs, heart rhythm, oxygen levels, and overall stability are continuously observed. Patients may initially remain on ventilator support until they are able to breathe independently. Pain management, infection prevention, and wound care are key aspects of post-operative recovery. Gradual mobilization begins within a few days, with patients encouraged to sit, stand, and walk under supervision. Medications are prescribed to manage pain, prevent blood clots, and support heart function. The hospital stay typically lasts between 5 and 10 days, depending on the patient's recovery progress and any complications.
